Virgie Marie Massie (Welker), of Potosi, Missouri was born on May 14, 1938 a daughter to the late Dorothy (Rulo) Politte and the late Francis Politte. On June 22, 1957, Virgie was united in marriage to the love of her life, William Woodrow “Woody” Massie and they shared nearly forty-one years together and four children were born to this union. After Woody’s passing, Virgie later re-married Sterling Dale Welker on February 14, 2009 and they shared nearly nine years together. Virgie went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family at the age of seventy-nine.
Survivors include her husband, Dale Welker of Potosi; four children: Rebecca Boyer of Potosi, Vicki (Donnie) Hawkins of Herculaneum, Kim Massie of Potosi, Benji Massie and Erin Koch of Potosi; brother, Herman Politte of Cadet; three sisters: Clara Pennington of Potosi, Clarice (David) Buckley of Belgrade, Annie (Dave) Fenstermaker of Ebo; five grandchildren: Josh (Katie) Mapes, Brad Hawkins, Ashley (Chad) Moss, Keagen Massie, Malachi Peppers; five great grandchildren: Aubree, Aniston, Rhenn, Mila and Alli; brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Delmar and JoAnna Fenwick; also surviving are nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, Virgie was preceded in death by her first husband, William “Woody” Massie; two brothers: Larry Politte and Gary Politte; three sisters: Judy Boyer, Mary Skaggs and Leoma Huskey; sisters-in-law: JoAnn Politte and Debbie Massie; brothers –in-law: Ennis Pennington, Chuck Boyer and Gene Huskey.
Virgie worked for Kennon’s Café, the IGA and Karsch’s where she retired from with over thirty years of service. Virgie was very active throughout many community clubs and organizations such as: TOPS, 12 – O’Lier and the Red Hats. She was a huge supporter of the Sayers Senior Center and was the life of the party anywhere she went.
Virgie was well known for her peanut brittle which she made for years. Her famous peanut brittle was one of the greatest fundraisers that assisted in paying off her church’s debt. Another joy of hers as well as the whole community was her annual Christmas display. Christmas was one of her favorite times of the year. Virgie enjoyed playing her accordion. She delighted in performing for friends and family and making them smile.
Virgie was a devoted Christian and loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with all of her heart. She loved playing the piano and singing in church. Virgie was a proud grandmother. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family meant the world to her. Virgie fought a good fight, kept her faith and finished her course. Her memory will live on in the legacy that she left.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 8, 2018 from 3-8 p.m. and Friday, February 9, from 9-11 a.m. at the DeClue Funeral Home.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 11 a.m. held in the DeClue Memorial Chapel.
Interment and final prayers will be held in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were respectfully entrusted to the care and direction of the DeClue Funeral Home, Potosi, MO.
