He passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on Sunday afternoon, December 15, 2024. Lessel was a beloved figure in his community. His life was characterized by hard work, dedication to his family, a deep love for the land he tended.
On August 18, 1962, Lessel was united in marriage to Carol Livingston at Potosi United Methodist Church and they shared 62 years together. Lessel's career began humbly in 1958 when he joined ARKMO Power, reading meters, where he worked diligently through various mergers, ultimately retiring from Ameren around 1998. In addition to his significant career at the power company, he served for approximately 11 years under Ed Hillen at Western Auto. In his later years, he was proud to be a part of the Belgrade State Bank team, conducting cattle inspections, a task that combined his love of agriculture with his professional expertise.
Lessel was a man of many interests. He had a profound passion for farming and diligently tended to his cattle, often working from sun up to sun down. His connection to the land was evident as he embraced the rural lifestyle, enjoying rides on his side by side with his loyal dog, Rex. A familiar figure in the neighborhood, he was often referred to as the patrolman of John Smith Road. His fondness for community was further reflected in his visits to the Family Steak House, where he cherished time spent with his breakfast buddies.
In past years, Lessel first attended Providence Baptist Church with his parents, and later with Carol. Lessel also attended Irondale First Baptist Church for many years. Most recently, Lessel attended Pleasant Hill Christian Church with his family. Lessel loved his church family and always looked forward to their fellowship.
Family held a special place in Lessel's heart. Those who remain to treasure his memory include his beloved wife, Carol; two daughters, Jana Portell, and her husband Lynn, and Julie Krause, and her husband Mark. His role as a grandfather was equally treasured; he is survived by three grandchildren: Lyndsey Midgett (husband, Logan), Kelsey James (husband, Tyler), and Kael Krause and McKenna Moore. He was affectionately known as "Papa Mo" to his great-grandchildren, Baker Midgett and Kit James.
