Isabelle Sutton

February 20, 1926 — February 2, 2014

Isabelle Sutton of Potosi, Mo., departed this life on February 2, 2014, having reached the age of eighty seven years, eleven months and thirteen days. She was born on February 20, 1926, in Big Springs, Mo., a daughter of the late Wade Walker Johnson and Clara (Moore) Johnson.
Belle Sutton was born into, and lived through, the hard times of the Great Depression. This contributed to her developing great strength, both emotional and physical. It also led to her acquiring the ability to make things work, no matter how little she had at her disposal. Using just a few ingredients, she could prepare a full eight course meal. If you REALLY wanted to offend her, all you had to do was show up at her house and then turn down her offer of something to eat and drink!

Belle had a passion for cooking, and this led to her running two restaurants in Washington County back in the 1950's---Sutton's Cafe and the Triangle Cafe. Every year she would put out a huge garden, and then spend most of the summer canning. She understood what hard work was, and why it was necessary. She definitely wasn't afraid of it. She was that rare type of lady who could pull a calf at 9 o'clock in the morning, and then still find time to put an apple pie together and have it in the oven by ten.

Belle was an accomplished cattlewoman. She had a natural knack for dealing with animals. She took great pride in her herd, and rarely needed much help in caring for her cows. And you never had to wonder how she felt about something---she wasn't one to hold her tongue. By the time she finished giving you her opinion about something, you had NO doubt what her position was on a particular topic and that was one of her greatest attributes!

Anyone who was fortunate enough to know Belle Sutton knows that she was a loyal friend, through thick and thin. If she was your friend, she was your friend for life and was there for you through the good times and the bad. Belle was grateful to God for all the blessings that she had, and there was a joy about her that touched everyone that she came in contact with. Belle's legacy is that she enriched the lives of others. She has given us all a fine example to follow.

In addition to her parents, Isabelle was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Jackson Sutton, sister Lula Mae Pugh, brother Wade Walker Johnson, Jr., sister in law Ina Shy and a stepson, Jack Sutton.
Those who remain to mourn her passing are a son Randall Sutton and wife Lisa of Potosi; grandchildren Kristina Sutton and fiancé Derek Thompson of Potosi, John "Colt" Sutton of Springfield; special niece Barbara Cossarini of Chesterfield; brother James Johnson and wife Barbara of New Florence; two sisters in law Mary Johnson of Montgomery City, Dorothy Sutton of Camdenton; three stepgrandchildren; special friend Alice Akers; many other relatives and friends who will sadly miss her.
Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, February 6, 2014, at 1 PM at the DeClue Chapel with Elder Leonard Compton officiating. Serving as pallbearers were John Cunningham, Ralph Eskridge, Joe Gillam, Wayne Smith, Derek Thompson and James Reed.
Interment and final prayers were held at the Sutton Family Cemetery. All arrangements were entrusted to the care and direction of the DeClue Funeral Home.
