Harlan loved his family, farm, and freedom. He was always bragging about his children and grandchildren. He loved taking care of his animals – dogs, chickens, hogs, cattle, donkey, sheep, etc. You name it, he probably took care of it. He would spend countless hours nursing a sick or injured animal back to health. He was an unofficial veterinarian and always had a petting zoo available for kids or even adults.

Harlan did not serve in the United States Military alongside his brothers due to medical reasons, but he was extremely proud of his sons and grandson, whom all served in the United States Air Force. He would well up with pride as he explained their assignments to defend this great nation.
Harlan was a faithful donor to the American Red Cross Association. His donations totaled to be over nine gallons over the years.
Harlan grew up in the Lutheran church, was married in the Presbyterian church, brought his kids up in the Methodist church, then finally found home at Liberty Baptist Church. He was baptized on September 27, 2009 in Clear Creek, close to Belgrade, Missouri.
Harlan retired from Flat River Glass Company after thirteen years but held numerous other jobs over the years including delivering mail and driving a truck.
