Eugene Niethe

September 8, 1933 — October 10, 2011

Eugene Albert Niethe of Potosi, Missouri departed this life on October 10, 2011 at Georgian Gardens Nursing Home having reached the age of seventy eight years, one month and two days. He was born on September 8, 1933 in St. Louis, Missouri, son of the late Albert Niethe and Gladys (nee Whistler) Niethe-Rakop.

On May 27, 1984, Gene was united in marriage to Merrilee (nee Perry) Laufketter and they shared 27 happy years together.

Gene served in the U.S. Navy and was a Korean War Veteran. Shortly after returning from Korea, he joined the Maplewood Police Department and then transferred to the fire department. He was then promoted to an Engineer and firefighter for Creve Coeur Fire District. He retired after 32 years of dedicated service.

Gene had a real zest for life. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and his two little dogs.

Those who remain to mourn his passing are his wife Merrilee Niethe of Potosi, MO; six children Karen Bibi of Michigan; Eugene (Rhonda) Niethe II of Piedmont, MO; Russell Niethe of St. Louis, MO; Phillip Niethe of Park Hills, MO; Chris Niethe of St. Louis, MO; Eugene (Chris) Niethe III of Wood River, IL; step children Perri Lynn (Greg) Kalin-Doell of Pacific, MO; Rick Laufketter of Valley Park, MO; Jim Laufketter of St. Louis, MO; Matthew (Cathie) Laufketter of Clayton, MO; Kristan (Steve) Portell of Old Mines, MO; Michael Laufketter of Barnhart, MO; thirty one grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends who will sadly miss him.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 4pm at the DeClue Chapel with Ron Nauman officiating. Military Taps were played and flag presented by Local Post 6996 VFW member Warren Malugen.

All arrangements were entrusted to the care and direction of the DeClue Family Funeral Home.
