Elmer Reed

July 17, 1927 — May 27, 2012

Elmer Eugene Reed of Sullivan, Missouri departed this life on May 27, 2012 at his residence having reached the age of eighty four years, ten months and ten days. He was born on July 17, 1927 in Lesterville, Missouri a son to the late Ott Reed and Opal (Miller) Reed.

On April 14, 1989, Elmer was united in marriage to Virginia (Judy) Eaton Isgrigg and they shared twenty three years together.

After serving in the Army, Elmer started in Lumber Business in 1950, at Shirley, Missouri, with his father Ott Reed. Later in years brothers Melvin, George and James were also owners with Elmer. He was active in Reed Lumber until it was sold in 1993.

As president of Reed Lumber Company, Elmer helped start Missouri Forest Products Association in 1959. He served as president for 3 terms and Board of Director of Missouri Forrest Products Association over a 50 year period. He was highly regarded by this organization. Elmer felt very strong about this organization for support of timber company's in Missouri.

Elmer also purchased Scott Welding & Machine. In mid 1960, he changed the name to Reed Welding & Machine and ran that business for several years in Potosi, Missouri.

In 1968, Elmer started Reed Chevrolet in Potosi, Missouri.

During Elmer's business career, he was very active in politics. He helped to elect Warren E. Hearnes for governor of Missouri, in which Elmer was selected one of the honorable colone's for the inauguration of Governor Warren E. Hearnes.

He was also instrumental in the election of Richard (Dick) Ichord to congress and also Mel Carnahan to governor.

Elmer was a member of the Rotary Club and School Board in Potosi for approximately 18 years, a member of the Washington County IDA for twenty five years, a member of the Mercantile Bank Board for many years and a lifetime member of White Oak Grove Church.

Those who remain to mourn his passing are his wife Judy Reed of Sullivan; sons Bob (Carol) Reed of Potosi; Gary (Rhonda) Reed of Potosi; daughter Pat Cook and friend Al Adiar of Potosi; brothers Melvin (Mildred) Reed of Potosi; George Reed of Potosi; James (Pat) Reed of Steelville; Roger (Sue) Reed of Owensville; Wayne (Jane) Reed of Potosi; Terry (Charlyn) Reed of Potosi; sisters Ruth Glore of Potosi; Helen Franklin of Potosi; Betty (Doyle) Abbey of Potosi; Hope (Mike) Jarvis of Potosi; seven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; four stepchildren Donna, Dedra, Crystal and Brent; many other relatives and friends who will sadly miss him.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 1 PM at the White Oak Grove Church with Rev. Mike Jarvis officiating.

Interment and final prayers were held at the White Oak Grove Cemetery. All arrangements were entrusted to the care and direction of the DeClue Family Funeral Home.
