Melvin Ott Reed of Potosi, Missouri, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 7, 2016 at the Potosi Manor Nursing home having reached the age of eighty six years, eight months, and two days. He was born on October 5, 1929 in Bismarck, Missouri, a son to the late Ott Reed and the late Opal (Miller) Reed.
On November 10, 1945, Melvin was united in marriage to Mildred (Eye) Reed. Together they shared sixty eight years. Melvin served in the United States Army from June 21, 1950 to October 9, 1951. During his time in service, Melvin received the Meritorious Unit Commendations Korean Service Medal with three bronze service stars.
Melvin is survived by his three sons: Jerry Reed of Cadet, Larry Dean Reed of Potosi, and Perry Reed and wife Diane of West Plains, Missouri; two daughters: Fern Wallis and husband James of Steelville, and Mary Esther Parry and husband John of Steelville; brothers: George Reed of Potosi, James Reed and wife Pat of Terre Du Lac, Wayne Reed and wife Jane of Potosi, Roger Reed and wife Sue of Owensville, and Terry Reed and wife Charlynn of Potosi; sisters Ruth Glore, Helen Franklin, Betty Abbey and husband Doyle, and Hope Jarvis and husband Mike – all of Potosi; sister-in-law Judy Reed of Sullivan; and a host of twenty two grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mildred Reed on November 23, 2013; an infant sister; sister Anna Bell Reed; brother, Elmer Reed; brothers-in-law: Larry Glore and Donald Franklin; and sisters-in-law: Wilma Lee Reed and Norma Lee Reed.
Visitation for Melvin was held on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at the White Oak Grove Baptist Church from 4:30 PM until 8:00 PM and on Friday, June 10, 2016, beginning at 9:00 AM until the time of service. A funeral service began at 11:00 AM on Friday at the White Oak Baptist Church with Elder Mike Jarvis officiating.
Interment and final prayers were held at the White Oak Grove Cemetery where Melvin received full military honors consisting of Gun Salute, Taps, flag folding and presentation by the United States Army, the local VFW Post 6996, and Patriot Guard.. All funeral arrangements have been cared for by the DeClue Funeral Home.
