Avondel L. ?Cotton? Turnbough of Irondale, Missouri departed this life on April 12, 2006 at his residence, having reached the age of 70 years, 10 months and 19 days. He was born at Palmer, Missouri on May 24, 1935, a son of the late Ira Turnbough and Bertha (Blair) Turnbough.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Jarvis on February 20, 1961 at Potosi, Missouri and to that union three children were born. He served in the US Army from 1958 to 1964. He retired from the Doe Run Company after 27 years of service ? working as a Warehouse Clerk, Accounting Clerk, Inventory Supervisor and Ombudsman. He was an auctioneer for 30 years with his partner and long time friend Burnham Richards. He serviced many auctions throughout Washington and adjoining counties. He owned and operated his own cattle farm for the last 40 years and he took great pride in raising his cattle.
He liked to fish and hunt, but being with his family brought him the most pleasure. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to his family and friends. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
Avondel accepted Christ as his Savior early in life and was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.
During the years before developing Parkinson?s Disease he was very active in the Potosi Lions Club and the Washington County Saddle Club. He served as President of Washington County Farm Bureau for several years, and he served on the Washington County Extension Board.
In addition to his parents Ira and Bertha Turnbough, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Russel Jarvis, his mother-in-law, Blanche Jarvis and a sister, Shirley Sherman.
Those who remain to mourn the passing of his life include his wife, Shirley Turnbough; his daughter, Tamara Ruiz and her husband Robert of Omaha, NE; his two sons Gregory Turnbough and wife Terry of Belgrade and Barry Turnbough and wife Deanna of Irondale; five grandchildren, Richard Ruiz, Nicholas Turnbough, Emily Turnbough, Wyatt Turnbough and Benjamin Turnbough; two step grandchildren, Tim Purcell and Kristine Carpenter; one brother, Lindel Turnbough and wife Catherine of Mineral Point; one sister, Judy Weekly and husband Donald of Barnhart; brother-in-law Donald Sherman, brothers-in-law and sisters-in law Jim and Ruth Dickey and William and Sharon Gibson; nieces; nephews; aunts; uncles; cousins and many other relatives and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral services were conducted on Saturday April 15, 2006 at 4 PM at the Britton Chapel, Potosi with Rev. Mike Jarvis officiating. Serving as pallbearers were Greg Turnbough, Barry Turnbough, Bill Gibson, Jim Dickey, Donnie Weekley and Richard Ruiz.
Interment and final prayers were held at Caledonia Methodist Cemetery. All arrangements were entrusted to the care and direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Potosi.
